Winnipeg Art Gallery Penthouse, Skylight & Roof Terrace Renovation

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is considered one of the most striking pieces of architecture in Canada.  It is an icon for Winnipeg and houses a very impressive collection, including perhaps the best collection of Inuit art in the World. Stantec Architecture Limited (SAL) provided Phase 1 of the work towards refurbishing and upgrading the majority of the Penthouse level of the building.  Verne Reimer Architecture (VRA) completed Phase 2 of the work. Verne Reimer performed Principal-in-Charge and Project Architect responsibilities for the complete project.

Phase 1 of the work included the replacement of the roof terrace roof membrane and insulation and the refurbishment of the skylight.  Included within the work, was the replacement of the walking surface roofing surface.  The skylight was glazing was upgraded significantly with low-iron glazing and the actual configuration of glazing was reconsidered to bring additional light into the space and provide a better visitor experience from the Penthouse Lobby. VRA reviewed this feature with Gus da Roza for his approval, which he endorsed completely.

Phase 2 of the work included the recladding and reglazing of the Penthouse and Mechanical Penthouse structure. The reglazing allowed for the opportunity to redesign the access to the exterior via a different system, which allowed for a better environmental seal, while improving the functionality. The glazed separations of the two spaces were also improved with a more elegant solution.  The Penthouse Lobby and restaurant ceiling, and lighting was redesigned and/or enhanced. A full building code strategy and agreement relative to equivalencies required preparation and implementation to allow for the reconfiguration of elements.

The aesthetics embrace the modern sensibility of the original structure and architecture, while improving the visitor experience, the technical nature of the building and the functionality of both the interior and exterior spaces.
